Typos give us the tee-hees, but don’t laugh TOO hard

There is hardly ANYTHING I love more than giggling over typos published by respectable sources. That’s why I felt almost giddy when I read TheAtlanticWire.com’s December compilation of their favorite typos of 2012. No question. There were some DOOZIES.

Ahem. Let’s assume they meant “correction” rather than “correrction,” shall we?

We all know how easy it is, when typing fast, to transpose or omit letters, which is why typos frequently inspire our fits of gleeful giggles. (Better thee than me, right?)
And when unintentionally dirty typos hit print, as when public becomes pubic, Letterman and Leno usually have it on the airways within the hour.

This week, The Atlantic Wire rated the year’s plentiful offerings of typographical mishaps, and I’m guessing you’ll enjoy seeing Bloomberg become Bloobmerg, and learning from the Associated Press that Jill Kelley was a Florida socialist as well as a socialite, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  CLICK HERE and give it a read when you have a minute.

Beyond the chortles, however, a SERIOUS lesson accompanies the damage-control efforts that undoubtedly occur once the PR folks start tripping over their own toes in the rush to acknowledge and correct their blunders. For instance, when the University of Texas made its “most unfortunate commencement typo” with the dreaded pubic versus public switcheroo, the apology included an unfortunate  misspelling of egregious. Better yet, The Toronto Sun sent folks into fits after a straightforward admission of guilt for publishing inaccurate information bore the misspelled label: “CORRERCTION.”

Whoops.
It’s good to remember, I think, that when we’re in a hurry to criticize and poke fun at others, it’s possible, and even probable, that we just might make some mistakes of our own, causing the finger-pointing to begin anew. It happened just this week when actor Rob Lowe took umbrage, rightfully so, with grammar used by a sloppy Fox news sportscaster, and booed him in a tweet. It would have been a smooth move, but for the misspelling of grammar on the hashtag, “#DeathOfGrammer #LoweringTheBar.”

Whoops again.
Prepare to giggle.
